District Overview

The Ionia Public School District gathers its 3,044 students from an area covering more than 115 square miles, including the City of Ionia and the Villages of Lyons and Muir. Elementary students attend one of five neighborhood schools, usually the one closest to their home: Boyce, Emerson, Jefferson, Rather or Twin Rivers. All students in grades 6, 7, and 8 attend Ionia Middle School, while students in grades 9 through 12 attend Ionia High School.

Our professional teaching staff of 200 is dedicated to the overall education and nurturing students need to be successful in a rapidly changing technological world. Knowledgeable, motivated and qualified teachers in the Ionia Public Schools strive to bring out the talents in each student, as well as to help students master curricular objectives.

Professional development for all staff is a district priority; and a majority of staff members model the "life-long learning" process by attending classes themselves to seek advanced degrees and specialized certifications. Professional development, like curriculum development, Capturing Kids Hearts, community service, and academic improvement are long-term commitments of Ionia Public Schools.

Our dependable support staff, both inside and outside the classroom, enhances educational progress by providing necessary services, while our capable administrative staff provides the vision, leadership and support needed for continuous achievement and innovation in a large district with diverse needs. Our Board of Education is responsible for the formulation and adoption of policies consistent with the laws governing public education as set forth in the Michigan Constitution and other legislative acts. All meetings of the local board are open to the public. The board meets on the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in Conference Room 304. Regular attendance at board meetings is the best way to become informed about major decisions affecting the Ionia Public Schools.
