Ionia Public School's financial performance could be termed above average for Michigan school districts during a time of great concern about the ways schools are funded.

The Ionia District has experienced community approval of nearly $48 million in bond issues during the past 20 years.  These funds have helped modernize and transform school facilities and technology.  Projects approved in the 2006 bond election total $16.67 million, including a $3.1 million renovation to the outdoor athletic facility as well as major upgrades in technology and extensive replacements of roofs, parking lots and driveways throughout the district.

The district has set the offering of a quality and complete program for all students as a top priority, despite the difficult financial time faced by Michigan.  The largest portion of the district's annual $28.5 million budget is spent on instruction for its 3,100 students in K-12 classrooms and in Community Education programs.  The full time staff includes 215 teachers, counselors and social workers; 180 support staff members, including paraeducators, custodians, food service employees, secretaries and bus drivers; and 19 administrators, including principals, department directors, and central office.

Currently, Ionia Public Schools levies 18 mills for operation on non-homestead and non-agricultural property, and 7.72 mills for debt retirement.
